Evanston Community Gathers for Interfaith Dances of Universal Peace
Celebrating Connection Across Cultures Through Dance and Song

Unity on the North Shore invites the community to “Dances of Universal Peace,” a free, interfaith event celebrating peace, unity, and cultural connection. Held Saturday, September 20 from 1:00–2:30 PM at 3434 Central Street, Evanston, IL, participants will come together through chant, live music, sacred phrases, poetry, and guided movement to experience spiritual depth in motion.
This participatory event requires no musical or dance experience; all steps and phrases will be taught in a safe, mindful environment. Emphasizing "participation—not presentation," the gathering welcomes all who seek connection, reflection, and a taste of spiritual transformation through communal practice.
The Dances of Universal Peace are an interfaith spiritual movement founded in the late 1960s by Samuel L. Lewis and rooted in Sufi, Zen, and diverse world traditions. They utilize song, chanting, poetry, and movement to foster unity across cultures and spiritual backgrounds. Open to people of all ages and faiths, DUP events happen worldwide in settings ranging from retreats to community centers.
