Evanston Man Charged With Attempted Murder After Shooting At Family: Police
A verbal altercation between family members escalated into a shooting in Evanston over the weekend, police said.

EVANSTON, IL — An argument between family members escalated when a 57-year-old Evanston man shot at a van with his relatives inside, according to the Evanston Police Department.
Officers responded to multiple reports of gunshots heard in the 2300 block of Greenwood Street on May 3 at approximately 7:55 p.m. A victim also called police to report his family member had shot at him and a second victim during a domestic dispute, officials said.
Responding officers met with the victim in the 2200 block of Dempster Street, where he told police that he and an intoxicated family member were involved in a verbal altercation. According to police, the man said he and another person were leaving the Greenwood Street home when the suspect, who was identified as John Ross Sr., approached and fired several shots at the vehicle.

Though the van was struck by the gunfire, no injuries were reported.
"Responding officers recovered multiple spent shell casings at the Greenwood Street scene and ballistic evidence from the van. An uninvolved family member was safely evacuated from the home," Evanston police said in a statement.

Police found Ross inside the home and took him into custody without incident at about 9:40 p.m. Detectives executed a search warrant at Ross's residence and found ammunition, but no firearms, police said.
The Cook County State's Attorney's Office reviewed the investigation and approved two felony counts of attempted first-degree murder. Ross appeared at a detention hearing Tuesday morning at the Skokie Courthouse.
