Helicopter Lifts To Northwestern Building Force Sheridan Road Closure

Sheridan Road between Haven and Noyes streets will be closed to cars, bikes and pedestrians between for up to four hours Monday, staff said.

EVANSTON, IL — Sheridan Road is set to be closed to all cars, bicycles and pedestrians Monday morning to allow helicopters to remove equipment from a building.

City staff announced a series of helicopter lifts are planned between the roof of the Northwestern University Technological Institute, 2145 Sheridan Road, and the parking lot across the street.

Starting at 7 a.m. Monday morning, police will shut down Sheridan Road in both directions from Noyes to Haven streets.

Staff said the closure will last up to four hours.

Crowd control is planned around the parking lot, which will serve as a staging area for the operation, according to a map released by city staff.

The technological institute building from which the equipment is being removed was designed by Holabird and Root and built in 1942. According to the university's website, it is one of the largest academic buildings in the world, housing Northwestern's engineering school, as well as its chemistry, physics and astronomy departments.
