
Labor Day, which takes place this year on Monday, Sept. 3, celebrates the many social and economic achievements of American workers: the 40-hour workweek, the 8-hour workday, the right to be safe in the workplace, a minimum wage, pensions, health insurance and many other benefits.
Here is a list of what’s open and what’s closed in observance of the holiday:
City of Evanston

Most government buildings will be closed Monday, including the Civic Center, Chandler-Newberger Center, Fleetwood-Jourdain Center, Robert Crown Center and Levy Senior Center. For a full list, visit the city's website.

The post office will be closed on Monday. Express mail will be delivered.
Trash
Solid waste, recycling and yard waste pick-ups will not be done on Monday. Groot will pick up solid waste and yard waste one day later this week.
Grocery stores
Most grocery stores and supermarkets are open with regular hours Monday.
Banks
Most banks and credit unions will be closed.
Library
All Evanston Public Library facilities will be closed Sunday, Sept. 1, and Monday, Sept. 2.
Schools
All area schools will be closed Monday.
