Office Depot In Evanston To Close Permanently

EVANSTON, IL — People who need office supplies in a hurry will soon have nowhere to shop in Evanston.

The Office Depot at 2722 Green Bay Road is scheduled to close Oct. 19, store employees told Patch.

Signs posted over the weekend announced that "everything must go," signaling the end of the era of big box office supply retailers in town.

Located near the Wilmette border, the company's northern Cook County outpost also includes a co-working space.

Office Depot, which merged with OfficeMax in 2013, has been closing stores in the decade since.

The latest closures comes after executives at Office Depot parent company, ODP Corporation, reported a 10 percent drop in sales during the second quarter of this year.

According to company officials, the firm has closed 22 stores in the first half of the year. It had 894 stores still open at the end of July, 56 fewer than it had at the same time last year, according to

“Our performance in the first half of the year was clearly below expectations, placing us behind our goals for the year,” CEO Gerry Smith said in a release.

The impending closure was first reported by Evanston Now, which noted that the former OfficeMax space on Howard Street now houses a Ross Dress for Less, while its Sherman Plaza property has become part of a Target store.

Other nearby area office supply stores include: the OfficeMax at 5507 W. Touhy Ave in Skokie's Village Crossing shopping center, the Office Depot at 134 S. Waukegan Road in Deerfield's Deerbrook shopping center and the OfficeMax at Fullerton Plaza, 1829 W. Fullerton Ave., in Chicago's Bucktown neighborhood.
