EVANSTON, IL — After more than 25 years representing Chicago's North Side and the north suburbs, Democratic Rep. Jan Schakowsky announced her retirement Monday.

Schakowsky made the announcement that she wouldn't seek reelection in the upcoming primary election at her annual Ultimate Women's Power Lunch at the Sheraton Grand Chicago hotel.

Schakowsky, 80, was first elected in 1998 and has been an advocate for health care and senior issues throughout her time in the House. She currently serves on the House Energy and Commerce Committee and is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

She marks the second member of Congress from Illinois to announce their retirement this year. Last month, Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin, 80, announced he would conclude his time as the longest-serving senator ever elected to the body from Illinois, serving five terms.

The competition to represent Illinois' 9th District is expected to attract many candidates, including Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss and State Sen. Laura Fine. At the moment, the only candidate who has announced they will run for Schakowsky's seat is influencer Kat Abughazaleh.

Following news that Schakowsky won't seek re-election, Abughazaleh issued a statement.

"I want to thank Rep. Schakowsky for her decades of exceptional public service, both in the Illinois state legislature and the U.S. House of Representatives,” Kat Abughazaleh said. “I pledge that if elected I will improve upon Rep. Schakowsky’s already excellent commitment to providing robust constituent services, holding authoritarians accountable, and advancing progressive policy goals."

The General Election will take place on Nov. 3, 2026.
