'Love For Maggie' Fundraiser Set For Wednesday At The Wine Thief

Half of all tasting menu sales will go to the DeVries family, of Frankfort, whose 5-year-old daughter Maggie has an inoperable brain tumor.

FRANKFORT, IL — The Wine Thief Bistro & Specialty Wines is hosting a fundraiser Wednesday for Maggie DeVries, a 5-year-old Frankfort resident who was diagnosed last month with an inoperable brain tumor. Half of all tasting menu sales will go to the DeVries family and the "Love for Maggie" campaign.

The fundraiser is scheduled to run from 3:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., said Ed Thelen, who owns The Wine Thief along with his wife, Valerie Thelen. For $40, patrons get a four-course meal, from which there are multiple options to choose from for each course. A wine flight to go along with each of the courses is an additional $18. More information about the menu options can be found on The Wine Thief Facebook page.

The menu for the fundraiser is also a preview of what Wine Thief will be offering for Restaurant Week in Frankfort, which runs from Thursday until Feb. 27.

The "Love for Maggie" campaign has generated considerable attention on social media. That's where Thelen said he learned of Maggie and the campaign. Thelen reached out to the DeVries family because he and his wife wanted to help in some way, he said.

Thelen said the goal is to sell 100 dinners and be able to donate $2,000 to the "Love for Maggie" campaign. Nearly 80 reservations have already been booked, so it's recommended for those interested in attending to call ahead to make sure there is a spot available. Since the "Love for Maggie" GoFundMe campaign began Jan. 22, more than $192,000 has been raised. In that time, there have also been numerous other fundraisers by local businesses and organizations, a Valentine's Day card drive that got more than 6,000 cards for Maggie, and many, many individual contributions of Maggie's favorite things, such as pizza, movie screenings, a ride in a Frankfort firetruck, a private trip to the Field Museum and even video messages from Olympic gold-medalist gymnasts Simone Biles and Shawn Johnson East.

There is a "Love for Maggie" Facebook page that readers can check out and follow to get the latest information on Maggie and upcoming fundraising efforts.
