Matteson Evacuations Ordered After Train Derailment
The evacuation zone is one mile south of Main Street and 217th, one mile west of Main Street and .25-mile east of Main Street.
MATTESON, IL — UPDATE: As of 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, the Matteson Police Department has lifted the mandatory evacuation order for the affected areas, the Village said.
Main Street from 218th Street to 217th Street will remain closed as the Canadian National Railroad works to clear the scene.
"There is no immediate danger to the public, but we encourage everyone to remain clear of the area to allow crews to safely and efficiently conduct the clean-up process," the Village said on its Facebook. "The Matteson Police and Fire Department continue to assist CN Railroad with security and mitigation efforts."

Residents of Historic Matteson Main Street have been ordered to evacuate if you live on Main Street from the tracks south to Sauk Trail; 218th Street and 218th Place; and Charles Street.
The evacuation zone is one mile south of Main Street and 217th, one mile west of Main Street and .25-mile east of Main Street.
NBC5 reported that a freight train derailed in the area, and there is a suspected leak from the derailed cars. No details have been given about what the leak may be.
The Village said residents should plan for a long-term evacuation, and bring medication or supplies that may be needed.
Residents of Park Forest and Richton Park should contact their local departments for more instruction.
