Summit Hill D161 Board Of Education Member Resigns: Superintendent
Matt Carey, who was elected in April 2023, resigned last week.

FRANKFORT, IL — One of the newest members of Summit Hill District 161's Board of Education resigned last week, Superintendent Dr. Paul McDermott confirmed Monday.
Matt Carey, elected in April 2023, submitted his letter of resignation on Thursday, Jan. 25, McDermott said in an email.
The board will now replace a candidate to fill Carey's seat. Prior to his departure, Carey was critical of the board and vocal in his opposition of its decision to shutter two schools.

At a meeting Dec. 20, Carey chastised his colleagues for the rushed nature of the decision to close both Arbury Hills School and Frankfort Square School. Following several previously held public hearings, the board pushed the vote up to the December meeting—with some members saying they had little notice of the vote.
"First and foremost, the way this was put out in our agenda was an absolute despicable act," Carey said at the December meeting. "A real snaky thing to do."
