Winter Snowstorm: Keep Fire Hydrants Clear Of Snow, Ice
The Frankfort Fire Protection District is asking residents not to block hydrants after sidewalks and driveways are plowed and shoveled.

FRANKFORT, IL — Following the Friday's winter storm that blanketed the village under more than a foot of snow, the Frankfort Fire Protection District is asking residents to help keep fire hyrdrants clear of snow drifts. That also means ensuring that hydrants are blocked by snow when sidewalks and driveways are plowed or shoveled.
According to the U.S. Fire Administration, snow and ice should be removed around 3 feet away from hydrants. That's the minimum space firefighters need in order to access a hydrant in case of a fire.
Frankfort and much of the area are past the worst of the severe weather, but snow was still expected as late as Sunday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. About 12.8 inches of snow fell on the village Friday, the weather service reports.
