GENEVA, IL — Memorial Day weekend is a busy one in Geneva, and this year, two events will temporarily shut down streets in the city.

The MMTT Youth Triathlon race and the American Legion Geneva Post 75's annual Memorial Day Parade will impact traffic downtown and on the city's west side on May 26 and May 27, respectively.

The triathlon will be held at the Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital and surrounding roads from 6:30-9:30 a.m. the Sunday before Memorial Day.

  • Fisher Drive north of Heartland Drive to Bricher Road
  • Bricher Road west of Camden Street to Peck Road

The hospital, at 300 Randall Road, will remain accessible from Keslinger Road, and the Fisher Farms subdivision will be open at Keslinger Road, Heartland Drive and Prairieview Drive.

"Traffic control will attempt to limit the inconvenience as much as possible, but people should expect some delays while runners and bicyclists are on the roadway," police officials wrote in a news release.

The following morning, the American Legion will host its annual parade, stepping off at 10 a.m. from the Geneva Train Station. The parade will feature the color guard, local veterans, city officials, and Boy and Girl Scouts.

The procession will travel north on Third Street to the World War I memorial in Wheeler Park, where a Memorial Day ceremony will be held.

As a result of the parade, Third Street will be closed and so will the intersection of State and Third streets. Parking will be restricted on Third Street from Crescent to Stevens streets starting at 8 a.m. May 27. Police encourage drivers to use Route 25 as an alternate route during the event.

"The Geneva Police Department appreciates the public's patience and hopes everyone has a safe Memorial Day weekend," police said.
