Geneva To Get $1.28M In Coronavirus Relief From Kane County

GENEVA, IL — Kane County municipalities are set to receive tens of millions of dollars in coronavirus relief, but that funding falls well short of what most local governments said they would need to offset pandemic-related costs.

Two dozen municipalities requested a total of $80.7 million, but they will receive just over a third of that, documents show. Those 24 communities, plus three that did not apply for any relief funding, will split $27.7 million, with allocations based on population.

Kane County Sitting On $7M Surplus Of Coronavirus-Relief Funds

That total includes just under $1.3 million in federal funding for Geneva, according to Kane County Board documents. Geneva is one of only a few municipalities to receive almost all of the funding it requested from the county.

Aurora, the state's second-largest city, is set to receive about $7.7 million in coronavirus relief. The City of Lights had requested nearly $16 million to cover increased payroll costs and benefits for first responders and city staff.

County officials have earmarked a little over $5 million for Elgin, meaning the city is set to receive less than a quarter of the $20.5 million its officials requested, Kane County Board documents show.

The following municipalities will each receive seven-figure allocations: Carpentersville ($2.2 million), St. Charles ($1.9 million), Batavia ($1.55 million), South Elgin ($1.46 million) and North Aurora ($1.06 million).

The villages of Lily Lake, Kaneville and Virgil are set to receive a total of about $108,000 despite not submitting an application for any coronavirus-relief funding.

Coronavirus Deaths Surge In Kane County After Weeks With None

The county received about $93 million from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act in the spring, and the Kane County Board has spent the past few months working out how to use that money.

The county is set to keep about $51 million to cover its own expenses, while about $8 million has been set aside to help small businesses and nonprofits amid the coronavirus pandemic.
