Third Street Railroad Crossing Reopening Date Set

The Western Avenue railroad and pedestrian crossings are the next to close for the Third Main Line project.

GENEVA, IL — After more than a month of closure, the Third Street railroad crossing is set to reopen to traffic on Friday, city officials said.

The crossing was shut down mid-August to accommodate Union Pacific's Third Main Line project.

Once Third Street reopens, crews will begin additional restoration work and sign installation. Operations will shift to Western Avenue starting Oct. 7, with that railroad crossing, including the pedestrian crossing, anticipated to be closed for five weeks, according to a news release.

Officials said all schedules are subject to change due to weather or construction delays.

A detour will be in place during the Western Avenue railroad crossing closure. Drivers will be directed west on Fabyan Parkway, north on Randall Road, east on Kaneville Road, south on Gary Lane and east on South Street. The directions are reversed for southbound Western Avenue drivers. Drivers can also use Third Street or Route 31 to bypass the tracks.
