Find Ice Skating, Sledding Spots In Glen Ellyn As Snow Approaches

As a winter storm watch looms, residents can plan their outdoor fun by seeing the best spots to go sledding and ice skating in Glen Ellyn

GLEN ELLYN, IL — The Glen Ellyn area is forecasted to get significant snowfall as a winter storm watch takes effect midday Thursday. With snow and temperatures both predicted to fall steadily, the Glen Ellyn Park District may open its sledding and ice skating facilities for residents to enjoy some outdoor recreation.

Sledding in Glen Ellyn

If snowfall is considerable, residents can bring their sleds to zoom down the Newton Park Sled Hill at 707 Fairview Ave. Unsupervised sledding is available on the hill between dawn and dusk.

Ice Skating in Glen Ellyn

There are several spots to go ice skating throughout the village of Glen Ellyn, including a synthetic ice rink at Polar Plaza that does not require cold weather for skating.

Ice Skating, Curling at Polar Plaza

Polar Plaza reopened in the Crescent Parking lot on Nov. 25, kicking off its 2022 season. The rink offers ice skating from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. each day, unless severely inclement weather prompts a closure.

No ice skate rentals are available onsite, so visitors must bring their own skates. They can also visit or call Paul’s Shoe Service, 486 N Main St., at 630-790-1030, to inquire about purchasing skates.

Ice Skating At Lake Ellyn Park

When the weather has been cold for long enough, ice skating will open on Lake Ellyn.

No ice skate rentals are available onsite, so visitors must bring their own skates. They can also visit or call Paul’s Shoe Service, 486 N Main St., at 630-790-1030, to inquire about purchasing skates.

Ice Skating at Lake Foxcroft

Extended cold weather is required for skating to open at Lake Foxcroft. When conditions are right, the lake will welcome ice skating between 6 a.m. and sunset.

Ice Skating, Ice Hockey at Newton Park

The tennis rinks at Newton Park are turned into skating rinks when weather permits (if daytime temperatures stay lower than 22 degrees and ground frost is thick). Open skating is available from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. When open skating is not in effect or skaters are not using the rinks, the rinks can be used for ice hockey.
