Gazebo, Community Gardens Among Proposed Ackerman Park Improvements
The Glen Ellyn Zoning Board will review a proposal for community garden plots, a gazebo and other upgrades for Ackerman Park.
GLEN ELLYN, IL — Community garden plots, a gazebo and other amenities are among the improvements the Glen Ellyn Park District is proposing for Ackerman Park. The village's Zoning Board will review the proposal on Feb. 27.
The park district is looking to get the space at 800 St. Charles Rd. rezoned from a single family residential district to a conservation/recreation district. A requested special use permit to add the community garden plots and gazebo, along with a storage building and a portable restroom.
They are additionally seeking a variance to permit the gazebo to be 400 square feet instead of the current limit of 250 square feet.

The redevelopment would be located on a 59.6-acre piece of land located to the east of Churchill Woods Forest Preserve. The park district is proposing 76 garden plots at 100 square feet apiece, including some plots that are wheelchair accessible. The garden plots would occupy roughly 13,000 square feet of the property east of Lenox Road.
In addition to serving as a space for shade and shelter, the gazebo would be intended to host park district programming To accommodate people using the garden plots and park, the proposal includes seven parking spaces.

The zoning board meeting will be held Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. in the Glen Ellyn Civic Center.
