Glen Ellyn to Replace Downtown Lights

The new energy-efficient LEDs will use 75 percent less electricity.

The village of Glen Ellyn approved the purchase of 295 custom-made LED streetlights at the Sept. 12 board meeting. The new convertible Sternberg LED luminaires are energy-efficient and will use 75 percent less electricity than the current streetlight, according to My Suburban Life.

The village was awarded a $25,000 grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation to replace teh streetlights to an LED system and the funds must be distributed by Nov. 1.

The village board approved the purchase of 295 custom-made convertible Sternberg LED luminaires in the amount of $424,505, the installation of the luminaires by Utility Dynamics of Oswego in the amount of $100,300 and $35,000 in electrical materials, for a total project cost of $559,805, according to My Suburban Life.

"The existing lights are historically correct, so we wanted to have an LED that kind of fit that style," said Glen Ellyn Public Works Director Julius Hansen in the story.
