GoFundMe Started After Death Of Glenbard West Football Player

GLEN ELLYN, IL — A GoFundMe has been started to help support the family of Erik “Lonnie” Lonvick, a Glenbard West football player who died Saturday.

Lonvick, 18, died of an "utterly unexpected cardiac event caused by asymptomatic Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome," according to his obituary.

As a senior at Glenbard West, Lonvick played as an offensive tackle for the school football team.

"Lonnie had a beautiful smile, a positive and playful energy, and a big laugh, all of which were underscored by a deep kindness and a caring heart. He had an ever-growing circle of friends of all ages," his obituary states.

Per the GoFundMe page, any money raised will be used to help Lonvick's family pay for medical expenses and other costs related to his death.

The GoFundMe organizer, Beth Cheuk, wrote,"We are in conversation with Glenbard West High School about offering proactive cardiac testing for students, as well as the possibility of establishing a student scholarship in Lonnie's memory. Any additional funds received would go to these purposes."

As of Thursday, the more than $14,000 had been donated to the fundraiser.

A Memorial Gathering in honor of Lonvick is set for March 8 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Leonard Memorial Funeral Home & Cremations, 565 Duane St., Glen Ellyn. On March 9 at 11 a.m., a Memorial Service will be held at Holy Cross Church, 802 E. Geneva Rd., Wheaton.
