Recreational Pot Sales Up For Vote In Glen Ellyn
Glen Ellyn officials are set to vote Monday on whether to permit recreational pot sales within village limits.
GLEN ELLYN, IL — Glen Ellyn officials are set to vote Monday on whether to allow recreational pot sales within village limits.
Recreational marijuana sales became legal in Illinois Jan. 1, 2020. Since November 2019, the village has had a moratorium ordinance in effect on the vote over whether to permit dispensaries to sell cannabis in Glen Ellyn. The ordinance was initially established to allow the village to maintain its prohibition against recreational sales while observing the effect of such sales on nearby municipalities.
The moratorium was extended until December 2020 after Glen Ellyn voters weighed in on the issue with a referendum question in the Nov. 2020 General Election. The question read, "Shall the Village permit the sale of recreational cannabis within Village limits?"

Initially effective until July 1, 2021, that moratorium was extended until Sept. 28, 2021. Monday's vote comes in anticipation of that impending expiration date.
