Rep. Pihos Speaks on Public Impact of Obesity

State Rep. Sandy Pihos (R-Glen Ellyn) spoke Oct. 25 on the public impact of obesity and legislative efforts to curb the widespread health issue at the 2013 Obesity Awareness Symposium, Translating the Fight of Obesity with Clinical Care, hosted by Advocate Health Care in Downers Grove.

“Obesity rates have grown dramatically over the last few decades. Today, one in five Illinois children and one in five adults are considered to be obese” said Pihos, noting the economic impact of obesity is also rising. In Illinois, adult obesity alone is estimated to add $3.4 billion to annual health care costs, including $1 billion to Medicaid and $800 million to Medicare.

“The health professionals attending the obesity awareness symposium are on the front lines of fighting this epidemic, and it is important they are familiar with outreach programs available in the community and beyond,” said Pihos, who currently serves on the DuPage Regional Leadership Council of the American Cancer Society.

The symposium was part of a continuing medical education course for Advocate physicians, nursing staff, caretakers and clinical staff.
