Glen Ellyn Residents To Pick Spot Featured In Hokusai-Inspired Mural

Glen Ellyn will welcome the famous Great Wave off Kanagawa painting with a mural based on a village landmark chosen by residents.

GLEN ELLYN, IL — A mural inspired by Hokusai and Ukiyo-E will be painted in downtown Glen Ellyn to coincide with The Floating World, an exhibit coming to Cleve Carney Museum of Art in May. The village has tapped residents to cast their vote for which local landmark the Edo era-inspired mural should feature.

Residents can take part in an online survey to choose between the Glen Art Theatre marquee, the Glen Ellyn Civic Center, the historic horse trough and the Lake Ellyn Boathouse. The mural will be painted sometime before the summer of 2025; its location has not been disclosed as of January.

Hokusai and Ukiyo-e: The Floating World will feature paintings and woodblock prints from the Edo Period in Japan, one of the most recognizable of which is Hokusai's "The Great Wave off Kanagawa."
