GLENVIEW, IL — The following information comes from the Glenview Police Department (unless otherwise noted) and court records as a record of police activity, including incidents reported by the public and those arrested by police. Thomas Klonecki, 57, of the 1600 block of Monterey Drive, is accused of leaving the scene of a personal injury crash, failure to render aid, failure to exercise due care, and was arrested at 8:29 a.m. Oct. 9, at the Glenview police station. The charges stemmed from an investigation into a hit-and-run at 11:14 p.m. July 1, in the 1200 block of Waukegan Road. He was released and assigned a court date of Oct. 10.

Jeremy O'Connell, 35, of the 9100 block of Dobson Avenue, Chicago, had a warrant out of Glenview for identity theft, and was arrested at 10:48 p.m. Oct. 9, by Chicago police. He was taken to the Glenview police station, where he was released and assigned a court date of Oct. 14.

INCIDENTS

THEFT

  • A Mary Kay Lane resident reported on Oct. 7 receiving a text message on the previous day from someone claiming to be the assistant to their supervisor. They were instructed to purchase gift cards from Mariano’s for the supervisor. They purchased $3,100 in gift cards and sent the codes to a different number provided by the caller.
  • A resident of the 4100 block of Cove Lane reported at 10:35 a.m. Oct. 7, they had lost their cat and had posted fliers offering a $100 reward. An hour earlier, they had received a text from an unknown person claiming to have found the cat and wanted the reward upfront. The resident agreed to send $25 electronically to a number, but the person then asked for more money. The resident refused and requested the cat or the $25 be returned. The person has not returned either.
  • A resident reported at 3:12 p.m. Oct. 7, that while they were dropping off several boxes at a business in the 2500 block of Waukegan Road, an unknown woman offered to assist. They said they declined, but after the interaction they noticed their wallet was missing. The woman is described as black, 45 to 50 years old, 5-foot-3, petite, wearing a black jumpsuit, with black glasses, and white shoes. After the encounter, the woman joined a man, described as black, 35 to 40 years old, 6-foot-4, athletic build, short or bald hair, wearing a beige coat. The pair may have fled in a black Audi sedan with heavy tinted windows.
  • A resident of the 1900 block of Chestnut Avenue reported at 3:56 p.m. Oct. 7, that around two weeks ago, they had noticed numerous pieces of jewelry missing from their master bedroom. They suspect their former housekeeper of taking the jewelry. The estimated loss is around $10,000.
  • The Glenview Fire Department reported at 4:06 a.m. Oct. 9, finding an automated external defibrillator had been stolen from a Glenview Park District park.

IDENTITY THEFT

A Burr Oak Drive resident called police at 1:04 p.m. Oct. 7, to report someone had used their email address to request a direct deposit change from their employer. They said their most recent check for $2,699.69 was deposited into an account not belonging to them. They notified the employer, and a new check was sent.

DISORDERLY CONDUCT

  • Police responded to the 2100 block of Pfingsten Road at 12:06 a.m. Oct. 8, after someone had called and said he had shot his mother in the parking lot and would shoot people who approached him. Officers checked the area but did not locate the caller or anyone needing assistance. After an investigation, officers learned the phone number used was a Google Voice number. Officers contacted the caller, who used a voice changer and yelled racial slurs at officers, and hung up numerous times. The person later answered and said he would be "swatting" all the hospitals in the area, swatting officers, and claimed to be part of the criminal organization "764." The person continued calling dispatch and leaving messages for officers throughout the night.
  • A resident of the 0 block of N. Branch Road reported at 7:31 p.m. Oct. 10, seeing a drone hovering outside their bedroom at 8:10 p.m. Oct. 9. Officers checked the area but were unable to locate it.

UNLAWFUL POSSESSION OF A FIREARM

A Deerfield resident called police at 8:21 p.m. Oct. 10, to report a driving altercation. They said they had attempted to drive around a sedan. The driver merged into the same lane, causing the complainant to almost strike a curb. They pulled into a business in the 500 block of Waukegan Road. The sedan continued north. The complainant headed north and at Waukegan Road and Glenview, the driver of the sedan brandished a handgun.

FRAUD

A Birchwood Court resident reported at 12:21 p.m. Oct. 13, investing $200,000 with people they had met through LinkedIn that said they would help build a portfolio with the funds to make more money with their company. They communicated via WhatsApp. Both people had all their bank account information, but when they started questioning red flags, they ceased communication, and they were not able to retrieve their funds from any account. They were advised to freeze their bank accounts.
