Fine Rejects Per Diem for Special Session
State Rep. Laura Fine said she will return any funds she receives for participating in a special session of the Illinois General Assembly.

State Rep. Laura Fine (D-Glenview) is refusing to accept a per diem payment for the special session of the Illinois General Assembly and will return the money to the state.
“Schools, social service organizations, and many other important groups are making do with less money from the state and lawmakers should do the same,” Fine said in a press release. “Lawmakers still have work to do and shouldn’t be rewarded for not completing the tasks they were given. Taxpayers deserve better and that’s why I am refusing to take this per diem and giving it back to the state.”
After the legislative session for the year has concluded, lawmakers may be asked to come back to Springfield to address unfinished business or new issues that have arisen.
Earlier this month, Governor Pat Quinn called a special session of the General Assembly, asking lawmakers to continue working on a solution to the state’s pension crisis. Each time legislators travel to Springfield for a special session costs taxpayers approximately $40,000 per day.
