GBS Students Clear Invasive Species at The Grove

Glenbrook South biology students cleared buckthorn at The Grove during a service-learning trip.

More than 300 Biology students at Glenbrook South High School participated in a service-learning experience at The Grove recently.  The all day experience involved a biodiversity study of plant life in The Grove, coupled with the clearing of the invasive species buckthorn for eventual burning.

The day began with students studying different types of plants in specific areas of The Grove that had been over grown with the invasive species. Buckthorn causes damage by crowding out other placid species and prevents for other, more beneficial, plants to grow.
