"While the outcome is not what we had hoped for, we respect the community's decision and are grateful to everyone who took the time to engage in the process and voice their opinion," Superintendent Dane A. Delli said in a statement. "This outcome will require us to make some difficult choices in the months ahead to address the budgetary shortfall. We are committed to being responsible in managing these changes, and we will keep the community informed as we develop plans moving forward."
If the measure had passed, district officials said the operating property tax rate would increase by 0.164 percent. For example, for the 2024 levy year, the approximate amount of the additional tax extendable against property containing a single family residence and having a fair market value at the time of the referendum of $100,000 is estimated to be $49.
For Fiscal Year 2024, the district's expenses are $88.6 million, while revenue is at $90.9 million. Officials are projecting expenses to exceed revenues for the 2027-2028 school year, which they say indicates deficit spending. The loss that fiscal year would be $400,000, and would go up each successive year by a larger margin.
The district consists of eight schools — Attea Middle School, Springman Middle School, Glen Grove Elementary, Henking Elementary, Hoffman Elementary, Lyon Elementary, Pleasant Ridge Elementary, Westbrook Elementary.
With the measure failing, the district said non-mandated programs, including music, art, gym and extracurricular activities, would be on the chopping block for the 2027 school year.
According to the annual Illinois Report Card, released annually, District 34 spent $19,854 spending per student during the 2023-2024 school year, up 5.37 percent compared to 2022-2023.
