Temporary Closure of Eastbound Traffic on Lake Ave.

The change starts Wednesday in order to keep the construction project on schedule.

The following is from the Village of Glenview:

Due to unforeseen encounters with underground gas and electric lines, the Illinois Department of Transportation’s contractor, ALamp Concrete Contractors, Inc., needs to accelerate work on the West Lake Avenue/Greenwood Road Intersection Improvement project in order to get back on schedule prior to the start of the upcoming fall school session.

The current (original) traffic plan has regional traffic using the detour along East Lake Avenue between Pfingsten Road and Patriot Boulevard; and local traffic in the construction zone restricted to one lane with the use of flaggers during the daytime work hours and two-way local traffic during evening and overnight hours.

Starting Wednesday, August 13, 2014, the contractor is revising the traffic plan on West Lake Avenue to:

Temporarily allow west-bound traffic only between North Lake Terrace and Pfingsten Road, on a 24-hour basis for no more than two weeks. That means eastbound traffic will be prohibited. This temporary closure will require all eastbound traffic (local and regional) to utilize the detour route along East Lake Avenue. The contractor will resume with the original local traffic plan (two-way traffic on West Lake Avenue) no later than August 23, 2014.Substantial completion of this project is targeted for October 17, 2014, weather permitting. See the attached detour route map.

Village staff coordinated with the area’s school and park district staff, who agreed the accelerated schedule was necessary in order to minimize delays for students once classes begin.

The project was started in June, so that it would not impact the end of the last school year and to avoid exacerbating detoured traffic in the area, which was to be eased by the opening of Shermer Road south of Willow Road with completion of a new railroad bridge.

Due to the utility conflicts noted above, the project is about four weeks behind schedule. By limiting traffic on West Lake Avenue to one direction only in the next two weeks, the contractor can make better progress by not having to work around vehicles. Without this temporary one-way traffic restriction, the project cannot be completed by the October 17 target, weather permitting.
