WNV positive mosquitoes have also been found in traps in Evanston, Lincolnwood and Northfield this summer.

GLENVIEW, IL — On Thursday, Glenview joined Evanston, Lincolnwood and Northfield in having mosquitoes test positive for the West Nile virus this summer. According to the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District, a batch of mosquitoes collected Monday tested positive in the agency's Northfield lab.

Additionally, local health officials are urging residents to "Fight the Bite" after several batches of mosquitoes tested positive for WNV last week in Lake County. According to the Lake County Health Department, mosquito pools tested in Bannockburn, Lake Villa and Vernon Hills tested positive for WNV on June 27, the first confirmed indicators of the virus presence in the county this summer.

NSMAD said that while the risk of being infected with WNV is low at this time, residents should take personal protection measures to minimize mosquito bites, including:

  • Using EPA registered insect repellent
  • Wearing loose fitting clothing
  • Avoiding peak mosquito feeding times during the hours around dawn and dusk
  • Examine their property
  • Eliminate any items that can hold water, particularly smaller items that may be easily overlooked
  • If it can hold water, it can breed mosquitoes

Residents should contact the NSMAD for assistance with any mosquito related issues they may be experiencing.
