Firefighters Search For, Find Missing Service Bird In Antioch

Firefighters responded to a “unique call” Monday evening after a service bird escaped from an Antioch home and it took over an hour to rescue it once it was located.

Nikki Zwier said her bird, named Sunny, went missing around 9 a.m. Monday.

“He’s a super loving and friendly little fella. We are sick to our stomachs and our hearts are breaking. I can barely breathe,” Zwier said.

She asked residents in the Abbey Estates subdivision in Antioch to keep a lookout for Sunny.

The Antioch Fire Department responded around 7:20 p.m. Monday to the 300 block of Abbey Court in Antioch for a service call.

The black shift crew from Antioch Fire Station #2 responded to the “unique call,” the fire department said.

The missing service bird was found in a tree after escaping from the home to “get some fresh air,” fire officials said.

The crew braved the below-freezing weather for over an hour before Sunny was successfully rescued.

Fire officials said the very tired and cold bird was returned to his owners safely.

“He is now getting warm and enjoying being reunited with his family,” the fire department said.
