Grayslake North Placed on 'Soft Lockdown' for 45 Minutes

Grayslake Police were reportedly searching for a suspect/suspects in the area.

Update, 11:26 p.m.: A report of a burglary-in-progress, and the subsequent search for a suspect, led to both Avon School and Grayslake North High School being placed on lockdown early Friday afternoon.

Grayslake Police were called to a burglary-in-progress reported by a homeowner on the 1700 block of Maplewood, an area of multi-unit townhouse-style buildings, Police Chief Phil Perlini said in a press release.

Police located the suspect and made an arrest within the subdivision at about 1:30 p.m, Perlini said.

Avon and Grayslake North were placed on lockdown "due to their proximity to the neighborhood in question," he said.

"At no time were students in harm's way; the lockdown was purely precautionary in nature," said Perlini. He added that information about the suspect will be released after charges are approved by the Lake County State's Attorney's Office.

Original story: Grayslake North High School was placed on a soft lockdown for about 45 minutes Friday as police searched for a suspect or suspects in the area.

Grayslake Police officials said the school was asked to go on a soft lockdown as a precaution "due to something going on in the area," but could not elaborate on the situation.

Denise Kindle, assistant superintendent for personnel services in Grayslake District 127, said Grayslake North Principal James Roscoe received a call from the Grayslake Police Department because police were "looking for suspects in the area."

The school was placed on soft lockdown at about 1:15 p.m. Kindle said a soft lockdown means that students cannot leave campus for any reason and that the perimeter of the school is being watched so nobody can come in.

"It's more just not allowing people in or out during that period of time," said Kindle. The all-clear was issued around 2 p.m., she said.

"No one was ever in danger at North. It was just a precaution because they were searching in that area," said Kindle. "(The suspects) were never on school grounds."

A similar incident occurred today at Glenbard North High School, which was placed on soft lockdown as police searched the area for an individual who was ultimately arrested, according to the Chicago Tribune.
