Murder Charges Filed In 2021 Road Rage Shooting Of College Student

Llovani Gomez of Chicago has been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of Daniel Lobo, 22, authorities said.

GURNEE, IL β€” A 36-year-old Chicago man faces murder charges in connection with allegations he fatally shot a 22-year-old local college student who was home for Thanksgiving break in 2021.

Local authorities on Tuesday announced that charges have been filed against Llovani Gomez in the 2021 road rage case, according to a news release from the Gurnee Police Department. Gomez, who is currently in custody for an unrelated matter, has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Authorities say Gomez fatally shot Daniel Lobo, 22, during a road rage confrontation near the intersection of Waveband Avenue and Grandview Avenue in Gurnee shortly after midnight on Nov. 20, 2021. Lobo sustained a gunshot wound to the back during the confrontation and was taken to Vista East Medical Center in Waukegan, where he later died.

Lobo, of Waukegan, was set to graduate from Southern Illinois University later that spring.

The Gurnee Police Department and Lake County Major Crime Task Force investigated the shooting, which lead to charges being approved by the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office.

β€œThis marks an important step in pursuing justice for Daniel and his family,” said Gurnee Police Chief Brian Smith. β€œFrom the moment this tragedy occurred, our department has been committed to uncovering the truth and holding those responsible accountable. The approval of these charges reflects the tireless efforts of our investigators, in close coordination with the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office. While no legal action can ever fully heal the pain of losing a loved one, we hope this development offers some measure of closure and reassurance to Daniel’s family and friends, who continue to grieve his loss.”

Gomez is expected to make a court appearance on May 20 in connection with this incident.
