Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued: Hail, 70 MPH Winds Possible

The severe thunderstorm warning will be in effect through 2:30 p.m. for McHenry and Lake counties, according to the National Weather Service

LAKE AND MCHENRY COUNTIES, IL — A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Lake, northeastern Kane, McHenry and Cook counties through 2:30 p.m.

At 1:18 p.m., severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from near Wonder Lake to Hoffman Estates, moving northeast at 30 mph, according to a news release. The storms could bring 70 mph wind gusts and hail the size of a ping pong ball.

Weather officials said people and animals that are outdoors during the storm will be injured, and residents should expect hail to damage roofs, siding, windows and vehicles. The wind gusts could also cause considerable tree damage as well as damage to mobile homes and roofs.

Locations that are expected to be impacted by the storm include: Chicago, Elgin, Waukegan, Arlington Heights, Evanston, Schaumburg, Palatine, Skokie, Des Plaines, Mount Prospect, Hoffman Estates, Glenview, Buffalo Grove, Bartlett, Crystal Lake, Streamwood, Hanover Park, Carpentersville, Wheeling and Park Ridge.

Residents are encouraged to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building during the storm.
