Man Hit Woman With Car, Ran Over Dog During Carjacking In Grayslake: Police

Syed Akbar is being held on a $150,000 bond.

A Skokie man is facing charges after he allegedly hit a woman with a car and ran over a dog during a carjacking in Grayslake, police said.

Syed Akbar, 42, of Skokie, was charged with vehicular hijacking, unlawful possession of a stolen motor vehicle, theft, aggravated assault with a motor vehicle and driving while license revoked.

The Grayslake Police Department responded around 4:40 p.m. on February 12 to 10 North Lake Street in Grayslake for a call of a vehicle theft.

Grayslake Police Chief Phil Perlini told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that the victim’s friend took the victim’s car without permission.

While the suspect was leaving the area, the victim tried to stop the car and was struck by it, Perlini said.

The suspect also ran over the victim’s dog that was running around at the time.

The suspect left the vehicle in an area parking lot where it was later recovered by police.

Police conducted a thorough investigation and the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved charges against Akbar following the investigation.

Court records show an arrest warrant was issued last Tuesday and Akbar was taken into custody on Friday. He was ordered held on a $150,000 bond.

A status of attorney hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
