The blaze does not appear suspicious, but it is being investigated by detectives and fire officials, police said.

LAKE COUNTY, IL — A house fire near Grayslake left a man dead, according to Lake County authorities, but his mother survived.

Sheriff’s deputies responded around 12:40 a.m. Sunday to the scene in the 17800 block of West Winnebago Drive, law enforcement said. They spoke to the homeowner, a 63-year-old woman who escaped the blaze but told authorities her 44-year-old son was still inside and was trying to get out, according to police.

Deputies tried to enter the house but the smoke was too heavy, according to law enforcement, who said Gurnee firefighters arrived shortly afterward and found the man inside. He was unconscious and not breathing, authorities said, and, despite lifesaving measures, he was pronounced dead at an area hospital.
