LAKE COUNTY, IL — A woman’s family has started an online fundraiser for her after she lost her son, her house and her two dogs in a fire on Mother’s Day.

Dave Schlagman created the GoFundMe for his mother-in-law, whom he identified only by her first name, Phyllis.

Sheriff’s deputies responded around 12:40 a.m. Sunday to the scene of the fire in the 17800 block of West Winnebago Drive near Grayslake, law enforcement said. They spoke to the homeowner, a 63-year-old woman who escaped the blaze but told authorities her 44-year-old son was still inside and was trying to get out, according to police.

“Her son woke up to discover the fire in progress and quickly woke his mother and helped her exit the burning home,” the GoFundMe said. “He went back to save the 2 dogs but tragically, was overcome by smoke.”

Deputies tried to enter the house but the smoke was too heavy, according to law enforcement, who said Gurnee firefighters arrived shortly afterward and found the man inside. He was unconscious and not breathing, authorities said, and, despite lifesaving measures, he was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

“Insurance will cover the house but so many other expenses will be coming including final arrangements for her son,” the GoFundMe said, noting Phyllis also has a disability, having only one leg. “It's terrible enough to lose your son but having to deal with the coming financial component will be overwhelming as well.”
