Oasis Offers a Safe Haven for Teens

For the past five years, The Oasis - Grayslake Youth Center has been a special place for kids in Grayslake and surrounding communities.

"We are in the business of keeping kids safe here," said Joyce Campbell, president of The Oasis - Grayslake Youth Center.

Since the Oasis opened in April 2005, more than 2,600 bands have performed and thousands of kids have done homework, met friends, hung out and just had fun at 151 Hawley Street, Grayslake.

Nearly 75 people stopped in for the fifth anniversary celebration at The Oasis on April 21. Campbell said the center has become a great, safe, fun place for kids.

She was grateful for all of the community support that helped get The Oasis started, and all that helps keep it going. This year, they received a $10,000 grant from West Bend Insurance out of West Bend, Wis.

"We'll keep on going," said Campbell, who enjoys all of the hours she and her husband Jeff Lockwood spend at the center. "We want this to continue to be a strong and healthy place for kids in the community."

She said many people have contributed to the success of the center.

"Our community events have gotten better and stronger every year thanks to Mike Pruitt," Campbell said.

Grayslake Mayor Rhett Taylor praised Campbell for her efforts at The Oasis.

"Joyce took the leadership on this project," Taylor said. "What is most impressive to me is that is shows the power of one person who is willing to give her time and energy."

Taylor said the youth center is a great local resource.

"This has become a respite for kids in the community," Taylor said. "Look at the difference it has made for the kids."

Campbell, in turn, thanked Taylor and the village of Grayslake for their support. The village leases the property to The Oasis and The Oasis maintains it.

"To have been fortunate enough to get this building in this location was the key," Campbell said.

Avon Township Supervisor Lisa Rusch and State Rep. Sam Yingling attended the open house.

"I think this is an amazing resource for the community," Yingling said. "Joyce should be commended for all that she has done."
