Woman, Boy Dead; Girl Critical; 3 More Injured: Lake Co. Crash

The three-vehicle crash Thursday evening northwest of Lake Villa left two dead and four more injured, police said.

LAKE COUNTY, IL — A 64-year-old Spring Grove woman and a 1-year-old boy are dead following a three-vehicle crash near Lake Villa Thursday evening, authorities said. The collision happened around 5:20 p.m. when a 2014 Ford pickup truck pulling a trailer attempted to merge from the shoulder of Route 59 near West Beach Avenue onto the roadway and was hit by a northbound 2017 Nissan SUV, according to a news release from the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

The Nissan rolled over and was then hit by a 2007 Hyundai minivan that was headed south on Route 59 at the time of the collision in unincorporated Lake Villa.

The driver of the Nissan, the Spring Grove woman, and a backseat passenger, the one-year-old boy, were both pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. Another backseat passenger in the lNissan, a 3-year-old girl, was taken by helicopter to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge where she remained in critical condition, Christopher Covelli said Friday.

The driver of the Hyundai, a 57-year-old man from unincorporated Lake Villa, as well as a passenger, a 15-year-old boy, were both seriously injured and were taken by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center. They were treated and later released, Covelli said Friday.

The driver of the pickup, a 41-year-old man from unincorporated Grayslake, sustained injuries that were not considered life-threatening and was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center.

Autopsies are scheduled for Friday morning. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, police said.

“The crash investigation is likely to take several weeks or months before a final conclusion is reached,” Covelli said. “Until then there won’t be any citations or charges.”
