ZION, IL — Zion Police Department officers were called to a reported armed robbery Wednesday morning in a Walmart parking lot in the 4000 Route of 173 in Zion. According to a news release from the police department, a 69-year-old woman from Wadsworth was leaving the store and walking to her car around 11:45 a.m. when she was confronted by a woman who threatened her with a knife, and demanded her purse, according to police. Police said the suspect pushed the woman, jabbed her in the throat with a knife and grabbed her purse.

The two struggled over the purse before the suspect ripped it away from the woman and ran eastbound through the parking lot.

Police said a 48-year-old man from Beach Park came to the victim’s aid and tried detaining the offender, who slashed his arm as he knocked her to the ground, according to the news release. However, the suspect got up and ran across Kenosha Road where she was picked up by someone driving a silver colored Mercury Mariner, according to the department.
