In Illinois' recently redistricted 10th Congressional District, Schneider, a Highland Park Democrat, was able to fend off a challenge from Lake Forest businessman Joe Severino.

Schneider, a former management consultant, secured his fourth straight reelection win and fifth term representing the north suburban district. As a freshman congressman in 2014, Schneider lost his first reelection bid to Bob Dold.

For the first time in those six congressional campaigns, Schneider refused to debate or appear at forums with his Republican opponent.

He said Severino, who did not face a primary opponent, had a track record of "spreading conspiracies" and he did not want to lend legitimacy to the challengers views.

Earlier this year, Schneider had to pay back taxes after a Patch report revealed he and his wife had claimed homeowner's exemptions on two properties simultaneously.

Severino is facing ongoing Chapter 11 personal bankruptcy proceedings, records show. He told Crain's Chicago Business that he wound up with a default judgment against him in federal court after being misled by attorneys for his associates to whom he sought to transfer a valet company he founded.

The Republican nominee said last week that the Illinois GOP is "literally hoping I lose" in order to install an "install an entrenched Republican" in 2024.

The 10th District extends from Cook County portions of the North Shore all the way north to the Wisconsin border to include most of Lake County, while extending west into McHenry County.
