Car keys returned after gym locker theft; 2 catalytic converters stolen from hotel parking lot: Highland Park Police Blotter

HIGHLAND PARK, IL — The following information comes from the Highland Park and Highwood police departments and public records as a record of incidents reported to the police and of those arrested by police. Criminal charges represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Lake County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law beyond a reasonable doubt.
INCIDENTS
CATALYTIC CONVERTER THEFTS
- Someone stole a catalytic converter from a Mitsubishi SUV parked the lot of the Courtyard Marriot hotel at 1505 Lake Cook Road between 8:30 p.m. May 18 and 5:30 a.m. May 19. Another catalytic converter was stolen from a Mitsubishi SUV in the hotel's rear parking lots between 10 p.m. May 18 and 7 a.m. May 19, police were told that afternoon.
- Someone stole a catalytic converter from a Honda SUV parked in the 700 block of Park Avenue West between the evening of May 21 and 3 p.m. on May 22 for an estimated loss of $2,000.
CRIMINAL DAMAGE
Police were told on May 20 that someone had used an unknown object to shatter a rear window of a Nissan SUV that was parked in the 1300 block of First Street between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on May 18.

LOCKER THEFT/CAR BURGLARY
Between noon and 1:30 p.m. on May 21, someone broke into a locked gym locker at the LA Fitness gym at 115 Skokie Valley Road and stole a set of keys to an Audi from inside. The thief then used the car key to get into the car and steal a wallet from inside. The credit cards that were in the wallet were later used fraudulently at other businesses, but the keys were left behind inside the car.
SHOPLIFTING
Three male shoplifters stole a green bag with a phone inside that was behind the register of an AT&T store at 59 Skokie Valley at some point prior to 1 p.m. on May 22. They were described as wearing a green baseball cap and a shirt with yellow sleeves, a yellow plaid shirt and a brown or black plaid jacket with lettering on the back.

BIKE THEFT
Someone stole a black- and blue-colored Kona Lavadome bicycle worth $750 after it was left locked to a bike rack in the basement of a residential apartment building in the 600 block of Central Avenue for an unknown amount of time.
ARRESTS/CITATIONS
A 20-year-old Highland Park resident was arrested around 2:30 a.m. on May 22 following a traffic stop at Skokie Valley Road and Central Avenue. He was charged with one count of misdemeanor driving under the influence of alcohol and issued a citation for driving 15 to 20 mph above the speed limit. Court records indicate prosecutors later dropped the DUI charge on the same day the motorist pleaded guilty to speeding in exchange for a supervisory sentence, which was completed in December 2022.
