Highland park Police Upping Patrols During Holiday Season

Until Jan. 5, Highland Park police will be on the lookout for impaired and distracted drivers.

HIGHLAND PARK, IL — In preparation for New Year's Day this year, law enforcement in Highland Park is upping patrols to catch impaired and distracted drivers on roads.

Through Jan. 5, officers will take part in the statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” “Drive High. Get a DUI.” and“Click It or Ticket” campaigns.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 143 to 219 traffic deaths are expected to take place around New Year's Day. In 2022, an estimated 401 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes in the U.S.on New Year's Day.

Impaired driving doesn't just include alcohol, some prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, other illegal drugs and marijuana can also land someone a DUI. Evanston officers will also be stepping up enforcement for seat belts, speeding, and distracted driving.

First-time DUI charges can cost a maximum of $2,500 in fines, and drivers could get their licenses suspended if convicted.

To celebrate safely this season, law enforcement recommends:

  • planning a safe way to get home before going to a party;
  • designating a sober driver, taking public transportation or using a ride-sharing service;
  • reporting impaired drivers on the road.
