Burglars Talk Way Into House, Stop Residents From Calling 911: Blotter

HIGHLAND PARK, IL — The following information comes from the Highland Park and Highwood police departments and public records as a record of incidents reported to the police and of those arrested by police. Criminal charges represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Lake County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law beyond a reasonable doubt.

INCIDENTS

HOME BURGLARIES

  • Someone broke into a home in the 1900 block of Keats Court through a rear kitchen door and ransacked multiple rooms at some point prior to about 9:30 a.m. Aug. 8. It was not known if anything was stolen at the time of the report.
  • Three burglars worked together to talk their way into a home in the 2300 block of Shady Lane around 3 p.m. on Aug. 8, police were told. One of them, who was wearing traffic vest and fraudulent Lake County name tag on it, told the resident there was an issue with their water. A second man helped the first one distract the resident while a third burglar got inside and went upstairs. Another resident noticed the third man and shouted to call police. The trio tried to stop the residents from calling 911 before they fled in a silver or gray 4-door SUV with a green rear license plate. It was not known if anything was stolen at the time of the report.
  • At some point between 10:30 p.m. Aug. 9 and 8 a.m. Aug. 10, someone got into a home in the 2900 block of Priscilla Avenue through an opened garage door that led to an unlocked door to the home. Burglars made off with purses, wallets, electronics, car keys, three bicycles and a Nissan Rogue parked in the driveway, which was later found in the garage of a vacant home in Lansing.

VEHICLE THEFTS

  • Staff at the Ace Hardware, 1393 Half Day Road, reported on Aug. 9 that someone had rented a yellow Ford box truck for one day on July 3 but never returned it.
  • Ace Hardware staff reported on Aug. 11 that someone had failed to return a rented Vermeer Mini Skid Steer and a Heavy Duty trailer with a ramp that was due back the day before after learning that the Skid Steer had been listed for sale and sold on Facebook Marketplace.

CAR BURGLARY
Someone got into an unlocked Honda parked at the Highland Park Recreation Center, 1207 Park Ave. West, between 1:15 and 2:45 p.m. on Aug. 9 and stole a wallet from inside. Credit cards from the wallet were later used fraudulently at unspecified shops.

THEFT FROM VEHICLE
Someone stole a catalytic converter from a Toyota Prius parked in a lot behind the 500 block of Hyacinth Place sometime between the evenings of Aug. 8 and Aug. 9.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
Someone shattered the rear driver's side window of a Chevrolet pickup truck parked in the 3300 block of Old Mill Road. Nothing was reported stolen from inside.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Miguel A. Cedillo-Velazquez, 24, of the 100 block of Keller Avenue, Waukegan, was arrested around 11 p.m. on Aug. 9 and charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol with no insurance, aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol with a revoked or suspended license, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater and driving with a suspended or revoked license following a traffic stop at Skokie Valley Road and Parkside Drive. Officers also issued him citations for operating an uninsured motor vehicle, improper lane usage and illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol by a driver.

Shirley Price Harwood, 52, of the 800 block of Harvard Court, Highland Park, was arrested around 2:30 a.m. on Aug. 14 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater following a traffic stop near the intersection of Skokie Valley and Half Day roads.

Ryan A. Nedoss, 27, of the 2600 block of Roslyn Lane, Highland Park, was arrested around 7:45 p.m. on Aug. 14 and charged with criminal defacement to more than $300 worth of property, a felony, after officers were dispatched to a report of criminal damage in the 400 block of Green Bay Road. Officer also cited him for driving in the wrong lane, improper overtaking on the right and disobeying a traffic control device.
