Composting Program Could Return to Highland Park

Highland Park's Natural Resources Commission is leading a charge to establish a composting program for food scrap and lawn clippings, reported the Chicago Tribune. The proposal would need approval from the city council.

The city started a pilot composting program in January that was put on hold in early May after Nu-Earth Organics, in Waukegan, closed in light of complaints about the stench from nearby residents, Patch reported.

The Natural Resources Commission is suggesting the city apply a small increase to its waste hauling fee to fund the program, according to the Tribune. If a composting program is approved, it would run through November, then resume in April, according to the story.
