HIGHLAND PARK, IL — Township High School District 113 Superintendent Bruce Law intends to retire next summer after five years in charge of the two-school district, the president of the school board announced Tuesday.

Law has led Deerfield and Highland Park high schools during an "unprecedented period," according to a message from District 113 Board President Dan Struck.

"The turnover of superintendents throughout the Chicago suburbs is testimony to how challenging the last five years have been," Struck said.

"I want to be as clear as possible: the Board did not ask Dr. Law to resign, nor did it encourage or suggest that he do so," he added.

Struck said Law has provided calm and steady leadership following several "tumultuous years of revolving administrations," throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and "insensible gun violence and a spate of spoofing and swatting attacks."

Law also negotiated the first formal collective bargaining agreement, or CBA, in the history of the district, the board president noted.

The CBA with the District 113 Education Association, or DEA, was took effect last month and lasts through June 2026.

Back in February 2019, Law quit a job as superintendent of Hinsdale Township High School District 86 to accept a three-year contract as chief of District 113.

According to Struck, the school board plans to interview superintendent search firms at a special meeting on Oct. 18 ahead of an expected vote on which on to hire on Oct. 24.

"HPHS and DHS share a proud tradition and we are committed to finding a leader who will build upon that tradition," Struck said.

"The School Board is resolutely committed to soliciting and listening to the District’s stakeholders including staff, students, parents and guardians, future parents and guardians, and all other community members."
