Jewel Staff Unlocks High-End Liquor At the Request Of Thieves: Blotter

HIGHLAND PARK, IL — The following information comes from the Highland Park and Highwood police departments and public records as a record of incidents reported to the police and of those arrested by police. Criminal charges represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Lake County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law beyond a reasonable doubt.

INCIDENTS

STOLEN CARS

  • Someone stole a Lincoln SUV from a driveway in the 400 block of Prospect Avenue between 7:30 p.m. Jan. 8 and 7:30 a.m. on Jan. 9. The vehicle may have been left unlocked with its keys inside. A burglar also rummaged through an Audi in the same driveway without taking anything. Waukegan police later recovered the Lincoln.
  • Someone stole an Audi sedan from a driveway in the 1100 block of Sheridan Road prior to 6 a.m. Jan. 14. Two other cars parked in the driveway were burglarized but not stolen. Golf clubs, clothes and a wallet were reported to be inside the car, which was later recovered by Chicago police.
  • Around 8:30 a.m. on Jan. 14, officers found an unlocked Volkswagen SUV with its door left open in the 1100 block of Bob-O-Link. The SUV's glovebox and center console had been rummaged through but nothing was reported as missing. Police learned another VW SUV had been stolen from the driveway after it was left unlocked with its keys inside. A purse containing credit cards, a garage opener and house keys was also left inside.

CAR BURGLARIES

  • Someone burglarized an unlocked Acura SUV parked in the 800 block of Yale Avenue sometime on the night of Jan. 8 or early morning of Jan. 9, stealing a Dewalt jump pack from inside and leaving its door open.
  • During the night of Jan. 8 or morning of Jan. 9 someone got into an unlocked Ford parked in a driveway in the 1400 block of Linden Avenue, but nothing was reported stolen from inside.
  • Someone stole about $5 in change from a Ford pickup truck left unlocked in a driveway in the 1100 block of Bob-o-Link Road around 1 a.m. on Jan. 14.
  • Sometime on the night of Jan. 13 or morning of Jan. 14 someone burglarized a Lexus parked in the 1100 block of Bob-o-Link Road, but nothing was reported stolen.
  • On the night of Jan. 13 or morning of Jan. 14, someone got into a Honda minivan left unlocked in a driveway in the 1500 block of McDaniels Avenue. Nothing was reported missing.

SHOPLIFTING

  • Around 7 p.m. on Jan. 11, officers were dispatched to the Jewel-Osco, 1600 Deerfield Road, for a report of a theft. Police were told that two thieves in black masks and hooded sweatshirts asked staff to help unlock the secure section of high-end liquor to buy some Hennessy cognac. Once it was opened, the thieves started filling up three Jewel baskets full of liquor and walked out. The shoplifters left behind two of the baskets, allowing the store to recover about $689 worth of liquor, but they managed to escape in a dark-colored Ford SUV with four bottles of Don Julio valued at $720.
  • At some point on Jan. 14, two people stole $1,387 worth of merchandise from the Ulta Beauty at 135 Skokie Valley Road, police were told the next afternoon.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Milton Katz, 67, of the 1400 block of Arbor Avenue, Highland Park, was arrested around 9:30 p.m. on Jan. 16 and charged with one count of misdemeanor domestic battery after officers were called to his home for a report of a disturbance.
