Highland Park to Introduce Trash Containers With Embeded Chips

Highland Park will become one of the first communities in the Chicago area to test out the new technology for garbage collection.

A new scanning program began this week that will replace stickers for Highland Park trash collection.
About 3,800 households in the area will no longer have to purchase stickers for curbside pickup.

The Daily Herald reports that Highland Park will be the first community in Lake County to use Radio Frequency Identification to track waste disposal.

Embedded chips are only read on Lakeshore Recycling Systems’ trash containers to track warehouse inventory and the number of times trash was collected each month in order to appropriately bill customers.

"We thought it would be easier for our residents," said Councilwoman Kim Stone, the city's representative on the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County in the story.

Highland Park is the first in the Chicago area to use the technology with all refuse carts containing the chip.
