Featured Obituary:

Laurence A. Dondanville, 94, passed away peacefully at his home in Deerfield, Illinois on January 1, 2023. He was born in Rock Island, Illinois on March 28, 1928, and was raised in Moline, Illinois by his parents Dr. Laurence Dondanville and Eva Dondanville (Ender). Larry attended St. Ambrose Academy in Davenport, Iowa, and graduated from Purdue University in 1950 with a degree in civil engineering.

After being inducted into the U.S. Army, Larry used his civil engineering skills as a Corporal in a topographic battalion in the Philippines from 1950-1952. The following year, he married his wife Rose Mary Lacey in Washington D.C. They then moved to Chicago, Illinois where Larry worked at De Leuw, Cather & Company, a Chicago-based consulting engineering firm. In 1956 they moved with their young children to Deerfield, Illinois, onto the land where his mother Eva had grown up that had been in his family since 1901. There he designed the plans and oversaw the construction of their home, where he lived for the next 62 years.

Larry had a successful career as a civil engineer, working on projects around the world, including the suspension bridge across the Bosphorus Straits in Istanbul, Turkey; the Kuwait and Abu Dhabi Motorway Systems; the Sydney and Perth Australia Expressway Systems; and the Mass Rapid Transit Rail Systems in Singapore and Taipei. In his retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his friends and family and took his family on trips to Hawaii, Europe, Alaska, and the Caribbean.

Larry was proud to be descended from the founders of Deerfield, who donated much to the building of Holy Cross Catholic Parish, the rectory, church and school. He was a man of many talents and was dedicated to his community, keeping his yard impeccably maintained and being actively engaged in the village to the joy and sorrows of the village hall staff. He was also deeply interested in his family history, keeping genealogy records for decades and eventually creating a website to connect the Dondanville family worldwide.
