Featured Obituary:
Bernard “Bernie” Dobroski was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He passed away on February 19th, 2023 at the age of 76.
Bernie grew up in Pittsburgh, PA and his passion for music was evident from a very young age. With a perfect pitch, he played accordion beginning at age 3 and performed for the local radio show, “The Stars of Tomorrow”. Bernie’s accordion and tuba talents landed him a spot in Washington D.C.’s US Navy Band from 1968-1972 where his performances ranged from tuba solos to concerts at the White House and Congressional functions. Bernie earned a BA of Fine Arts at Carnegie Mellon University, a Masters degree in music at Catholic University, and a Ph.D. from Northwestern University. He has extensive professional experience as a conductor, performer, impresario, music educator, author and speaker.
Bernie served as the Dean of the University of Oregon School of Music (1986-1990) and as the Dean of the Northwestern Bienen University School of Music (1990-2003). He later rejoined the Northwestern faculty as a John Evans Professor of Music and retired in 2020. He served on numerous boards including the Lyric Ryan Opera Center, Sherrill Milnes’ VOICExperience, the Jump Rhythm Jazz Project, the Illinois Arts Council and the Eugene Ballet Company. He also served as a judge for the Miss America Pageant (1986, 1989) in which his focus was to identify musical talent and award scholarships.
He was a true people person and was committed to connecting with students and supporting them in their careers. Bernie loved to help and support others in their creative and professional pursuits and many consider Bernie integral to their growth and credit him in helping connect them to life enhancing opportunities. Bernie would frequently host a university class in his home, arranging musical entertainment and serving favorite foods like pierogis. While in Oregon, each Thanksgiving Bernie opened his home to students who were unable to travel to be with their own families. Even during a rehab facility stay, Bernie made new friends, established new mentorship relationships and brightened the day for many by organizing a mini concert series. With a skill in storytelling, he was 110 percent behind those that he loved and would readily speak about their accomplishments and positive attributes.Read more via Donnellan Family Funeral Services »
