Featured Obituary:
George Stephen Scholly, 91, died on January 23 at his home in Glenview, Illinois, after living with cancer for many years. He was a wonderful father, husband, doctor, teacher, and scientist. Born in 1931 to Francis and Grace (Billheimer) Scholly, Steve grew up in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania in between living at naval bases in Pensacola and Key West, Florida and Waukegan, Illinois, where his dad, Captain Francis Scholly was stationed. He graduated from Waukegan High School and later Northwestern University, where he earned his B.S. in 1953 and M.D. in 1956.
A quiet man rooted in science, hard work and the service of others, Steve found his calling in medicine. For much of his career, Steve was a Doctor of Internal Medicine at Lutheran General Hospital specializing in Pulmonology, where he also served as Director of Pulmonary Medicine. In this role, he treated many patients with breathing problems related to lifelong smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke. He became an avid anti-smoking advocate, passionately expounding on the health hazard that was only partially understood at the time. He also was an enthusiastic teacher, holding clinical professorships at the University of Illinois, and later the University of Chicago, and taught until his retirement.
A creative soul, in his off hours Steve loved to nurture his orchid collection, take photos, or tinker with his hands, choosing to fix things instead of tossing them into the garbage. He traveled the world with his wife, Ellen, with whom he shared a lifelong passion for travel and learning. He loved to go on bike rides with family members or spend time with his children and grandchildren. He was an avid sailboat racer, frequently coming in first during the sailing races with the trickiest wind conditions.
Steve served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy from 1957-1959. He met his wife while he was stationed at the Brooklyn Shipyards, and the couple moved to Chicago in order for Steve to complete medical residencies at the VA hospital, Cook County Hospital and Presbyterian St. Luke’s Hospital (today known as Rush). The final phase of his medical education involved a fellowship in pulmonary medicine at Presbyterian St. Luke’s.
Steve was a medical professional who practiced what he preached – he was an active athlete, had an impressive appetite, and yet chose to live the rest of his life in moderation, surprising his doctors (but not his family) with his longevity and perseverance.Read more via N.
