Featured Obituary:
We regret to announce the passing of Charles (Chuck) Schramm, 89, of Highland Park. Chuck passed away early Wednesday morning, surrounded by family, following a long and valiant battle with cancer.
Chuck was born and raised in Highland Park, Illinois and spent his life in service to the community as teacher, coach and leader of countless camps and park district programs. A life-long journey producing an amazing anthology of stories and personal relationships which we continue to laugh and marvel over.
While Chuck perfected many moves on the basketball court on his way to becoming a collegiate All-American at Western Illinois University, he would be the first to confirm that his best move occurred in English class when he asked to borrow a pencil from the pretty girl who sat at the adjacent desk. The girl was Marcia Lynn Orr from Springfield, IL. Ultimately the shy boy from Highland Park managed the courage to ask Marcia on a date. After two weeks they were engaged, and married in just two months. The beginning of a love story that has no end. Chuck and Marcia criss-crossed the country in a string of basketball-related adventures, among them being drafted by the Boston Celtics and a National Industrial Basketball League Championship with the Wichita Vickers in 1958, after which they returned to Highland Park to raise their family.
Chuck believed in the virtues of sport and what could be gained through teamwork, self confidence, positivity and, of course, fun. His life and career spanned a multitude of organizations and generations across the community. He started his teaching career at Edgewood Junior High before transferring to Highland Park High School (HPHS) where he later became the head basketball coach - a position he held for 11 years. During summers, Chuck would start Sunshine Valley Day Camp and Highland Park Sports Camp. He was also a fixture on the local baseball diamond working for the Park District of Highland Park (PDHP) coaching kids and dragging the many infields in use around town. Later he would also coach at College of Lake County. Chuck concluded his coaching career surrounded by many of the children of his high school students in the ‘Little Dribblers‘ and ‘Jammers’ programs he championed at the PDHP, and at Schramm's Gym, a creation of his own where he endeavored to share the game he loved with his young grandchildren and their friends for whom he cheered through their final high school days.
Capping off 52 years of coaching basketball, baseball, softball and golf at HPHS, in recent years Chuck could be found on the golf course. He shared his wisdom of the game coaching the Boys JV team until 2018, and served as the starter at the Deerpath Golf Course into 2023. Despite his personal health challenges, he was always ready with a smile, a joke, a tip and words of encouragement.Read more via Donnellan Family Funeral Services »
