Featured Obituary:
Henry C. Schwenk, 99 (in his hundredth year), a long time resident of Northfield, IL, died Wednesday, June 14, 2023.
Mr. Schwenk was born in St. Louis, MO and attended Washington University and Iowa State University where he received a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, and participated in track at both schools as a distance runner frequently receiving All-American status for his performance, 1941-1944.
Mr. Schwenk served as an Ensign aboard the USS PCE 852 in World War II in the Pacific Theater. He came to Chicago in 1949 to work for the Henry Pratt Company of Aurora, IL. Holder of several patents, Mr. Schwenk designed the original rocket engine test facilities for NASA in 1950-51 and then worked on the design of the first Nuclear Power Plant as part of a 33 man team converting A-bomb technology to peace time uses. He authored the textbook, “Nuclear Power Engineering”, published by McGraw Hill in 1956; the first work on that subject.
He had a long career with Henry Pratt Company, developing numerous valves and actuators - eventually heading up that firm as President and Chief Executive Officer.
He took early retirement in 1986 to travel with his family, and lived winters in the Bahamas, on Windermere Island. Mr. Schwenk was an avid golfer, belonging to the Glen View Club in Golf, IL and Riomar Country Club in Vero Beach, FL.
He had many hobbies including photography, skeet shooting, reading, wood carving and jazz music as a collector. He was a member of the Audubon Society.Read more via Donnellan Family Funeral Services »
