Featured Obituary:

Rosemary Catherine (nee Fath) Steel was born in 1928, in New York City. Known for her grace and style, Rosemary was an exemplary wife, mother, and grandmother, sister, aunt, and a woman of unique charm and independence. Her witty sense of humor and elegance were legendary. When her orthopedic surgeon once asked her to describe her exercise routine, Rosemary quipped, “I polish my jewelry.” At 90, she wore pearls and a St. John’s suit while working out with her trainer.

Rosemary was the younger of two children born to Elizabeth and Frederick Fath. She was always very close to her brother Bob, a physician in Scarsdale, NY and his family. Rosemary graduated from the College of Mount St. Vincent and earned her master's degree in education from Columbia University. She modeled part-time for Saks Fifth Avenue and taught 4th graders in the NYC public school system. It was during a vacation in Miami that she met Ken Steel. They married in June 1952 and shared a deep love story and a true partnership.

Together, they founded K.A. Steel Chemical, Inc., pioneering and building manufacturing technologies for water treatment chemical manufacturing and distribution systems. The company became a nationally recognized industry leader. Ken, a chemical engineer, with Rosemary's support, redesigned Chicago’s Metropolitan Sanitary District, improving the safety, quality and taste of water for Chicagoans.

Rosemary and Ken welcomed four children: Joan, Robert, Kenneth Jr., and ten years later, Richard. She was an extraordinary mother. After Ken passed away in 1982, Rosemary, then in her early 50s, became chairman of the family business while raising her children with the help of her mother. She also served on several non-profit boards and chaired large galas, raising substantial funds for Catholic and Veteran charities.
